KUALA LUMPUR: Sada Borneo, the Malaysian five piece band competing in last night's episode of Asia's Got Talent on AXN won over the reality talent search series' celebrity judging panel, with Van Ness Wu, Melanie C, Anggun and David Foster all saying "yes"!
Comprising Hallan Hashim, Julian Frederick, Mohd Hilmi Mohd Isa, Nick Fadriel John and Allister Changat, Sada Borneo has set out to showcase the traditional sounds of Borneo to the world. They hope that by doing so, they will enable the younger generation to learn about Borneo's traditional sounds and music.
Their musical performance in the fourth episode of "Asia's Got Talent" saw them begin by bringing the sounds of tropical rainforests to make for an amazing auditory experience! Using tradition instruments, they made the mesmerizing sounds of rustling leaves, call of crickets, and the falling rain before complementing with bass and acoustic guitars for the melodic piece.
By the end of the performance, Sada Borneo had won a standing ovation from the live audience and judge Van Ness Wu, who enthused, "For me it was really magical, you took me to another place and I really loved it."
"We've seen so many acts that have tried to combine traditional and modern musical instruments and they've been disasters. But, finally it has worked," agreed fellow judge Melanie C.
"The ethnical part was really clever. I loved the rain sticks, the flutes — everything was just perfect," said Anggun.
"I'm going to give it to you straight. I really enjoyed the performance but I personally disagree with the other judges. The ethnicity of what you did, and the cultural showcase did transport me. But I didn't like the bass guitar and acoustic guitar in the mix. However, I loved, loved, loved the traditional part of it," explained David Foster, who still gave his approval when the judges voted.
As Asia's Got Talent hosts Marc Nelson and Rovilson Fernandez concurred, "They showcased their culture and did it really well."
The band name Sada Borneo translates to "the sound of Borneo".
