KUALA LUMPUR: The upgrading and migration of the light rapid transit (LRT) signalling system for Sri Petaling-Ampang route is expected to be completed and fully operational by year end.
Ampang LRT Route Operations chief Mohd Rahimi Ahmad said as such, the two-decade-old 30 trains were being replaced gradually with 50 new ones.
According to him, the old trains needed to be replaced as they had been in service exceeding the predetermined life span of 15 years.
"The old trains were moved to the depot at the Industrial Park in Ulu Yam ... works (to replace the old trains) which started Tuesday will take some time and expected to be completed later this year," he told reporters after observing the transfer of old trains at the Ampang LRT depot here today.
He said the transfer process would be completed over a longer period as the LRT depot in Ulu Yam was full and the existing trains there must be first moved to make way for new ones.
"Currently, about 35 Amy (name of the new trains) trains have been installed and began operation in the Sri Petaling route, while 10 old trains are still being used at eight stations for the Ampang line," he said.
Mohd Rahimi said the new six-car train service operating driverless by staff from the LRT Operations Control Centre was now equipped with safety features such as closed circuit television as well as people with disability-friendly features. — Bernama
