IPOH: A police officer and a businesswoman were among 17 couples who married on Valentine's Day at Wisma Chin Woo here today.
DSP Derek Lai Marn Kuen, 36, a senior investigating officer at the Ipoh Police Headquarters CID branch exchanged rings with Mou Ei Leen, 34.
"I met her while I was working in Kuantan as the commercial crime chief there. It was several attempts before I could get her handphone number and strike a conversation.
"We have been dating for the last 10 years and we could not settle down as I was transferred to several places," he added, after the registration ceremony.
Mou said she had been attracted to Lai's gentlemanly and caring character.
When asked why they picked Valentine's Day, Lai said: "It is an auspicious day for women."
Singapore-based chef, Calvin Chong Kar Kit, 21, and his wife Lim Poh Yi, 18, the youngest couple in the group got acquainted through the social media platform Wechat.
Lim, a school leaver from Ipoh, said: "I will be joining him once my examination results are announced."
Foo Wen Kang, 33, a technician from Sungai Siput, and tuition teacher, Tan Soo Yin, 29, from Kampar after courting for two years, also took the plunge today.
According to Foo, he picked Feb 14 as the special date will always be remembered.
Meanwhile Ipoh Chinese Chinese Chin Woo Athletic Association president Datuk Ooi Foh Sing said: "Initially 27 couples were supposed to be married but they had to return to work after the Chinese New Year holidays.
"They will register their marriage at the end of February," he added.
