Penang Digital Library to operate 24 hours in May

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Digital Library, the first digital library in Malaysia, will operate round the clock, effective this May 1, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said today.
He said the library was launched in August last year and had since, received up to 2,000 visitors a month.
He said the library, located at the Penang Free School ground, has the capacity of only 120 visitors at one time and opens daily from 10am to 10pm.
"I hope the 24-hour daily operation of the digital library can provide public a choice and a secured place to expand their knowledge," he told reporters after visiting the library here today.
He said this new digital form of libraries provided a new way of learning experience.
The library is initiated by the state government in collaboration with Keysight Technologies and Eastern & Oriental (E&O) Group and supported by TIME.
Lim said necessary measures had been taken to ensure safety of visitors at the library, including by placing security personnel on duty round the clock.
He said the library provides users structured access to information and knowledge via over 3,000 specially curated e-books, e-magazines and reference journals.
To be able to access to all the e-books, the public has to register as a member of the library. The annual fee is RM60.00 for adult and RM30.00 for students. — Bernama
