GEORGE TOWN: Police fired seven shots during a high-speed car chase at Jalan Paya Terubong this morning.
According to Northeast district police chief ACP Mior Faridalatrash Wahid, the incident started at 11.30am when a male suspect sped off during a road block.
"The suspect's identification was checked and after police ordered him to cooperate for a thorough check in his vehicles, the suspect sped off", he said in a statement today.
Mior said in his attempt to flee the suspect hit a motorcyclist and several cars during the chase.
He said the police ordered the suspects to stop the car but the suspect continued to speed off.
Police were forced to open fire at the suspect's cars to prevent the suspect from endangering other road users.
The 46 year-old suspect managed to get away towards Bandar Baru Farlim.
His car was later discovered abandoned at Lintang Payang Terubong and police found an 80cm sword, and a box of steel bearings inside.
The suspect has 10 past criminal records under his belt.
