53 complaints from public on implementation of the zero-rated GST

KEPALA BATAS: As of June 4, a total of 53 complaints from the public has been registered in regards to the implementation of the zero-rated Goods and Services Tax (GST) in the state.
The Penang Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (KPDNKK) director Mohd Ridzuan Ab Ghapar said from the total number of complaints, eleven has been solved with the operators or owners of companies adhering with the zero GST policy that has been implemented by the federal government.
"The remaining forty-two cases, however, is still under investigation," he told reporters during a press conference after checking on the prices of goods at the Mydin Mall in Bertam here today.
Mohd Ridzuan said the inspections were carried out in conjunction with Ops Catut 4.0, aimed at ensuring that traders complied with the reduction in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate from six percent to zero percent effective June 1.
The operations which started since May 25 also involved 859 premises and a total of 25,770 items inspected by the ministry.
He also added that the ministry has opened an Operations Room which will be operational at the KPDNKK state headquarters from 10am to 6pm since June 1 to enable consumers to lodge a report or complaints against errant traders.
Meanwhile, in George Town, hotels had received a positive boost with the implementation of zero GST policy with a steady stream of patrons visiting these establishments, especially for the Ramadan buffet.
Berjaya George Town Hotel Outlet Executive Isnan Md Jusoh said so far the response from customers was encouraging.
Lexis Suites Penang has also received a positive response from customers.
The hotel restaurant manager Mohd Hafizal Hasridin Mahayuddin said most of their customers are happy with the zero-rated policy.
"Business has been good so far," he said.
