KUALA LUMPUR: Most Malaysians appeared to have accepted with an open mind the results of the 14th General Election which saw the Barisan Nasional (BN) rule come to an end after more than 60 years.
Pakatan Harapan, a coalition of four relatively newly formed opposition parties, secured a big win in the polls on election day.
Private sector employee, Nurul Khairiah Yusoff, 26, said she was initially worried tension would occur following the transition of power, but instead a state of calm prevailed.
"There were some anxious moments at first, because some people were going viral about the situation getting tensed up when BN began to lose its grip on the government. But everything was fine without the riots played up by social media," she told Bernama today.
Government officer Piyapong Soom Poon, 36, said most Malaysians had become more mature and are able to accept a new government.
"People only wanted a change for the better and for it to take place in a peaceful and lawful manner," he said.
An entrepreneur Dr Faiz Na'aman, 35, said it was the culture of Malaysians to avoid confrontations and riots. — Bernama
