KUALA LUMPUR: The Department of Statistics (DoS) will be releasing the Women Empowerment data, comprising data series measuring various aspects of women's career participation in the public and private sectors, next week.
Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the annual data, set to be released for the first time on Dec 6, would give the public a better comparison in terms of gender, not only in relation to local sectors but also at the global level.
"Among the data criteria to be presented in the Women Empowerment, this data are types of work most women were engaged in, as we now see them more predominant in the health and education sectors than other sectors.
"We are also studying the involvement of women in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and for international measurements, we will see the number of women members of Parliament," he told reporters after opening the Malaysian Statistics Conference (MyStat) 2017 here, today.
The data will also show the number of women according to the level of education.
In his welcoming speech, Mohd Uzir said DOSM has innovated various ways of collecting information for the economy and population over the years.
"Over time, gradually we have adopted myriad technology such as computer-assisted telephone interview, computer-assisted personal interview and computer-assisted web interview which also known as e-Survey.
"In tandem with the development of socio-economic environment, DoS proactively released new statistical products, namely Social Accounting Matrix, System Environmental-Economic Accounting and Direct Investment Affiliates," he said.
Themed "From Data to Knowledge: The Journey", the fifth MyStats 2017 is jointly organised by DoS, Bank Negara Malaysia and Malaysia Institute of Statistics.
The one-day conference is aimed at providing an avenue for compilers, particularly DoS, BNM and other government agencies, to share data compilation, management and dissemination; while for the users, such as policymakers, researchers and academicians, to discuss on the translation of these data into useful knowledge. — Bernama
