Strawberry plants growing well in Kampung Jaya Bakti, Kuching

KUCHING: When Muhammad Hossen Ediwi first planted strawberries in two pots, he never thought the plants could thrive in his village at Kampung Jaya Bakti, located about 30km from Kuching.
Today the 62-year old former bookshop and restaurant owner has over 6,000 plants growing in pots at his home and family farm in the village.
Speaking to Bernama, Muhammad Hossen said he first bought two pots when the national-level Farmers, Livestock Breeders and Fishermen's Day (HPPNK) celebrations was held at the Dewan Suarah, Kota Samarahan in 2015.
"I planted them in the backyard and they started growing into strong and healthy plants. And that was when I decided to buy another two plants in Cameron Highlands and learn the techniques of growing strawberries.
"From just four plants I now have thousands growing in the family's "Jantayu Strawberry Farm" which began operating five months ago," said the father of three.
"To ensure the plants flourish, they must be fertilised and watered properly and care must be taken when using pesticides but most importantly, the temperature and amount of sunlight must be right.
"The strawberry plants could thrive in this village because the weather here is cold during the night and in the morning but as it gets hotter at midday and afternoon I have to ensure that temperature is maintained and the plants are not overexposed to the sun," he said.
Muhammad Hossen added that though the size of the fruits is smaller than those grown in Cameron Highlands his strawberry plants bear sweeter fruits.
"We are now focusing on sale of strawberry plants as production is still low," he said adding that he was now managing the one-acre farm with the help of two employees.
Muhammad Hossen sees great potential in the crop and has so far sold about 100 potted plants to customers interested in engaging in strawberry farming.
"Even though the farm will only be fully operational in about two weeks, we have been receiving visitors every week," he added. — Bernama
