KUALA LUMPUR: Some 1,000 people turned up today to say their final farewell to Puan Sri Lee Kim Hua – the woman behind the successful tycoon and founder of Genting Group Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong.
Many who arrived in busloads and cars had gathered at the family home in Jalan Tengku Ampuan, near Taman Duta here to escort the cortège as it made its way to Genting Highlands for the final rites.
However, members of the public could only follow the funeral procession for a few hundred metres from the family's home as the family had requested for her funeral ceremony to be a private affair.
Lee, 88, passed away peacefully last Friday and her remains will be interred at the Gohtong Memorial park, which is a memorial dedicated to the Genting founder.
At a press conference after the funeral, Kim Hua's youngest son, Datuk Lim Chee Wah, thanked everyone for their prayers and condolences during the family's bereavement.
"I'd like to give thanks from Malaysia and all over the world. I'd like to extend our deepest appreciation to those who have sent their greetings, wishes and flowers. Some (who have) come from afar to pray and send my beloved mother to lie peacefully. May she rest in peace," he said.
People from all walks of life had attended the three-day wake for Kim Hua.
They included royalty, politicians and prominent members of the business community.
Kim Hua's husband, Genting Group founder Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong, died in 2007.
After his death, Kim Hua inherited most of his fortune as the beneficiary of his wealth, making her one of the richest women in Malaysia.
Lee reportedly shared her wealth with her six children and nineteen grandchildren. She has been credited with being a firm supporter of her husband's pioneering efforts and maverick success in growing Genting from a hilltop gaming resort into a conglomerate with stakes in power generations, plantations, oil, and gas.
