Kemaman Port’s RM1.8 billion expansion, including a new wharf and breakwater, is set for 2028 completion to support ECRL and regional growth.
KUALA TERENGGANU: The expansion of Kemaman Port is scheduled for completion by 2028.
Kemaman Port Authority chairman Datuk Azan Ismail said the project encompasses three key components.
He said the authority received Department of Environment approval for its Environmental Impact Assessment report in December.
This approval allows reclamation work on a 22.66-hectare site to begin this month.
The reclamation process is expected to finish in the second quarter of this year.
It will be followed by the expansion of the wharf and construction of a breakwater.
Azan projected the total cost for these works at between RM1.5 billion and RM1.8 billion.
“The reclamation, estimated at around RM200 million, will create additional space for port activities,” he said.
This space will support cargo handling, warehousing, and maritime operations.
He noted that Kemaman and Kuantan are the only two commercial ports on the East Coast.
“These ports act as catalysts for maritime-driven economic growth,” Azan stated.
“The government therefore sees the need to expand Kemaman Port.”
He added that the port has long served as a feeder for the oil and gas industry.
Azan made these remarks during the port authority’s Back To School programme at Sekolah Kebangsaan Pusat Chabang Tiga.
He said the investment is expected to triple the project’s gross development value.
This value is projected to reach between RM6 billion and RM7 billion.
The expansion also aims to prepare for increased operations once the East Coast Rail Link is fully operational.
The ECRL project is scheduled to begin full operations early next year.
