Malaysia targets one million tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel by 2028

Malaysia is set to produce one million tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel by 2028 from two domestic plants, including a new Petronas facility

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is on course to produce one million metric tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by 2028.

Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani said this output will come from two domestic production facilities.

One plant, operated by Hong Kong-based EcoCeres, already has an annual capacity of 350,000 metric tonnes.

Petronas is building a second facility with a capacity of 650,000 metric tonnes.

“Once both plants are completed in 2028, total SAF production capacity will reach one million metric tonnes,” Johari told the Dewan Negara.

He was responding to a question on government plans to ensure stable feedstock supply for SAF production.

To secure raw materials long-term, the government will halt exports of used cooking oil.

It will also adopt a circular economy approach in plantation activities to guarantee sufficient supply.

Separately, Johari said the government introduced measures to attract SAF industry investment.

These include streamlining approvals for plant construction licences, production licences and export permits.

“The government will continue to assist and facilitate industry players interested in operating in Malaysia,” he said.

He added these measures signal full government support for investors entering the SAF sector. – Bernama
