Umar terlepas peluang berkelana awal ke Amerika Syarikat

KUALA LUMPUR: Pemegang rekod 400 meter (m) kebangsaan Umar Osman terlepas peluang berkelana awal ke Universiti Auburn, Amerika Syarikat untuk mengikut jejak langkah jaguh pecut Muhammad Azeem Fahmi, selepas lewat mendapat kelulusan daripada Persatuan Olahraga Kolej Kebangsaan (NCAA) negara itu.

Umar berkata perkhabaran mendukacitakan itu dimaklum jurulatih Muhammad Azeem, Ken Harnden dan beliau berkemungkinan hanya dapat berangkat ke bumi ‘Uncle Sam’ itu pada Ogos depan.

“Untuk Januari ini saya tak sempat ke sana sebab NCAA luluskan saya lambat dua hari.

“Di Amerika Syarikat, universiti mereka kalau lambat masuk bagi tempoh pengajian ditetapkan memang tidak dibenarkan dan perlu masuk pada pengambilan sesi kedua,” katanya ketika ditemui pada Majlis Anugerah Olahraga Malaysia semalam.

Bagaimanapun, atlet kelahiran Johor berusia 20 tahun itu menyifatkan ada hikmah di sebalik perkembangan tersebut dan beliau akan memberi fokus untuk menjalani latihan seperti biasa serta proses rehabilitasi.

“Mungkin belum ada rezeki untuk pergi pada Januari ini, tetapi saya tetap lega dapat juga pergi pada Ogos nanti,” katanya.

Ogos lepas, Umar mencipta sensasi selepas memperbaharui rekod 400m kebangsaan miliknya dua kali dalam tempoh 24 jam di temasya Sukan Universiti Dunia (Universiade) 2023 di Chengdu, China.

Beliau melakukan catatan 46.33 saat (s) di peringkat saringan sebelum mencatatkan 46.09s pada separuh akhir.

Pada Sukan SEA 2023 di Phnom Penh, Mei lepas, Umar mencatat masa 46.34s untuk memecah rekod kebangsaan berusia 22 tahun milik Zaiful Zainal Abidin iaitu 46.41s. -Bernama
