AirAsia flight grounded after ‘off-duty attendant’ triggers mid-air row

Viral video shows heated AirAsia flight dispute, passenger removed after defying crew

A mid-air drama that never quite left the ground has taken the internet by storm, after a fiery confrontation aboard an AirAsia flight became a viral talking point regarding passenger conduct and airline protocol.

The drama unfolded on a flight departing Chongqing for Kuala Lumpur, when a woman, who claimed to be an off-duty flight attendant for China Southern Airlines, became embroiled in a heated dispute with a fellow passenger.

According to widely circulated footage, the altercation began after the woman accused another traveller of recording her while she was speaking loudly on her phone prior to take-off.

She demanded the video be deleted immediately, setting a confrontational tone that quickly escalated.

Tensions rose further when a cabin crew member attempted to intervene in English.

The woman took issue with this, loudly questioning the crew’s language choice despite the flight being an international service. Berating the staff in Mandarin, she insisted that they should be able to communicate in Chinese if they were working in the service industry.

Efforts to de-escalate the situation proved unsuccessful. The confrontation intensified, with the woman reportedly demanding financial compensation on the spot for the perceived grievance.

The disruption ultimately forced the aircraft to return to the bay, delaying the scheduled departure and prompting intervention from local authorities. Police officers later boarded the plane—as captured in the viral clip—and the passenger was removed for failing to comply with crew instructions.

The airline confirmed that the decision was made in the interest of safety and to maintain order on board.

Despite the disruption, the flight departed after a delay of approximately 90 minutes and landed safely in Kuala Lumpur.

AirAsia X Bhd General Manager Benyamin Ismail later commended the cabin crew for their professionalism under pressure, highlighting their strict adherence to established safety procedures.
