A viral post calling critics of office fashion lazy has ignited a fierce debate on whether workplace grooming is professional pride or pointless vanity.

A COMMENT about how people arrive at work has triggered a wider debate over personal presentation after one Threads user criticised those who mock colleagues for putting effort into their appearance.

The Threads user was reacting to attitudes towards workplace attire, in which some people question why others spend time choosing outfits, grooming themselves, or looking more polished before heading to the office.

The original post did not come from the reacting user, but from another creator whose statement became the focus of the discussion.

The author wrote: “People who mock others for dressing up to go to the office are simply lazy and frumpy. That is the truth, but you lot are not ready for that conversation.”

The reacting Threads user shared the view that people who ridicule colleagues for dressing well are unfairly judging those who choose to present themselves differently.

The post framed dressing well as a personal choice rather than something that deserves criticism.

Several users responded with their own views on the issue.

One user supported the message by sharing that a colleague had questioned why they made an effort to dress well for work, despite preferring to wear casual outfits to the office themselves.

“When I dress up, she asks, ‘It’s just a job, why bother getting ready?’ I was speechless and didn’t know how to respond properly. I just said, ‘I know, right? Guess I’m too extra.’”

Another netizen took a more balanced approach, saying both groups should stop criticising each other and respect different preferences.

A separate user commented: “Appearance matters, especially if you work at the front desk or in a client-facing role. When you present yourself well, people feel more comfortable around you.”

Others focused on the importance of personal freedom.

One user stated: “If someone wants to make an effort, let them. If someone does not want to, let them be. It is everyone’s own life; do not act as though you are superior. Stop being judgemental.”

Another commenter argued that spending time on one’s appearance is reasonable because many people spend much of their lives at work and may want opportunities to express themselves through their clothing.
