A job candidate claims her marketing idea was used by a company after a failed interview, sparking online debate about fair hiring practices.

A job interview is usually meant to give candidates the opportunity to showcase their skills and creativity but one Malaysian netizen claims her ideas were allegedly used by a company despite not getting the job.

In a Threads post that has since triggered discussion online, the individual shared her experience attending an interview for a Marketing Executive position, where she was asked to pitch marketing ideas for the company’s brand.

“I once went for an interview at a company for a Marketing Executive position. One of the questions they asked was, ‘What kind of marketing ideas do you think could work for our brand?’

“I confidently shared my ideas and during the interview, they seemed genuinely interested in hiring me.

“Then… no call. No update.

“A few weeks later, I saw the company using the exact marketing idea I shared during the interview on their social media.

“Lesson learned,” the post read.

The post quickly gained traction, with many netizens expressing shock and frustration over the alleged incident.

While some joked that the company had basically received “free consultation”, others sympathised with the candidate, saying it felt unfair for interview ideas to allegedly be used without acknowledgement or compensation.

Many users in the comments section also claimed they had experienced similar situations themselves, particularly in creative industries such as marketing, design, media, and content creation.

“Haha, you really have to be extra careful, sis. I’ve been asked questions like this before, and since I’m quite feisty, I responded, ‘It’s better to do more research because even free AI tools can already generate better marketing ideas.’

“Boom. Let them deal with that themselves over there. I’m not trying to be arrogant, but if you want my ideas, then pay lah,” one user, known as evehwk, commented.

“Heh, good luck in using that one time idea. Where the company can get a whole lot more if they hire you,” another user, yuyuazmi, responded.

“This company is so cheapskate!” courteneyjs slammed.
