Netizens recall RM10 movie tickets and share why they now prefer watching films on OTT platforms due to rising cinema prices
“WATCHING movies at theatres isn’t the same anymore,” opined netizens on Threads.
One user shared that he misses the days when a movie ticket cost around RM10.
“If it was on a Wednesday, it was only RM6. Now one ticket is nearly RM30,” he added.
Many Malaysian cinemas offer Wednesday promotions, selling tickets at cheaper prices to attract more audiences.
“Wednesdays really bring back memories. Haha. Nowadays, I rarely go. The ticket prices are high, and the script and storyline are all over the place,” said Jay.
He added that he doesn’t mind spending money, but it frustrates him when the story is sloppy while watching it at the theatre.
Many netizens commented that they now prefer watching movies on over-the-top (OTT) platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, and HBO rather than going to the theatre, which is much more expensive than before.
“That’s why I’m willing to wait for it to come out on TV or OTT. I think twice before buying it—so expensive,” one user wrote.
A woman shared that with six people in her family, going to the cinema is out of their budget, even without including popcorn, drinks, or snacks.
Some netizens noted that cheaper movie tickets are still available if customers watch out for promotions and opt for lower-tier halls, such as deluxe cinemas.
