Robbie Williams surpasses The Beatles with his 16th UK number one album, setting a new British chart record after a 35-year career.
LONDON: Pop superstar Robbie Williams has set a new British chart record by achieving the most number one albums in UK history.
The Official Charts Company confirmed the milestone after his new album ‘Britpop’ became his 16th chart-topper.
“He’s the one!” said the Official Charts Company, referencing the singer’s 1998 hit single.
Williams, 51, has now surpassed The Beatles, who hold 15 number one albums.
The Rolling Stones and Taylor Swift are tied for third place with 14 chart-topping albums each.
Elvis Presley follows with 13 number one albums in the UK.
Williams’ chart-topping career began with his 1997 solo debut ‘Life Thru a Lens’.
He has sold an estimated 20 million albums in the UK and 80 million worldwide over his 35-year career.
‘Britpop’ is his first number one album in seven years.
Official Charts chief executive Martin Talbot said the achievement was remarkable.
“Not even the confident young 16-year-old from Stoke-on-Trent would have believed this were possible when he joined Take That back in 1990,” Talbot stated.
“But here he is, on top of the world, the UK’s number 1 album artist — of all time!”
