X-Men ’97 returns with fractured timelines, rising threats and a bigger mutant roster on Disney+ this July
FOLLOWING a critically-acclaimed run that nabbed it an Emmy nomination back in 2024, Marvel Animation’s X-Men ‘97 is set to return to Disney+ for its second season on July 1, where the series currently still holds its position as one of the
most-watched Disney+ Original animated series for the first season.
The second season is poised to directly pick up with the heroic mutant team of the X-Men, now divided and thrown across different eras in time as they struggle to navigate their return home.
Meanwhile, back in the 1990s, suspicious foes and new strains of mutant intolerance are on the rise in the wake of the X-Men’s absence.

New mutants, familiar voices
X-Men ‘97’s second season will feature nine episodes with most of the first season’s cast returning to reprise their roles.
The voice cast for the main characters is Ross Marquand as Professor X, Matthew Waterson as Magneto, Ray Chase as Cyclops, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Cal Dodd as Wolverine, Lenore Zann as Rogue and George Buza as Beast.
New characters set to be introduced in the second season will include Sabretooth, Lady Deathstrike, Havok, Mariko, Polaris, Danger, Psylocke, Archangel and Colossus.
The more militant group of the X-Men, called the X-Force, are also set to debut in the upcoming season.

Behind-the-scenes shake-ups continue
Following the controversial firing of series creator Beau DeMayo before the first season even premiered, his name appears to only be credited as an executive producer and writer for the new season.
It is currently unknown whether he is still the showrunner for the second season due to rewrites that were made to accommodate Matthew Chauncey taking over as head writer for the in-development third season.
Chauncey was also the head writer for Marvel Studios’ What If…? animated series.
The season will also see the return of Emmett Yonemura and Chase Conley as the episodic directors.
