PETALING JAYA: The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) places importance on providing equal opportunities for people with disabilities (PwD) to participate in healthy lifestyle activities, says its deputy mayor Aznan Hassan.
Speaking at the MBPJ-KBS OKU Carnival 2023 at D’Klana Hall here on Sunday, he pointed out that this would help to add value to their lives.
The carnival was held to promote inclusivity and empowerment within the differently abled community.
“This initiative plays a crucial role in fostering an inclusive society where the PwD community is not left behind,” Aznan said.
He expressed his support for efforts aimed at the development of the PwD community and said MBPJ recognises their rights and would continue to provide them with opportunities to enhance their lives.
At the carnival, the council showcased its proactive and caring approach to the OKU community by organising sports programmes tailored for this special group.
Among the events at the carnival were sport activities encompassing six categories aimed at talent discovery.
The carnival featured sports such as swimming, table tennis, weightlifting, boccia, archery and chess.
Aznan expressed gratitude for the presence of Mohd Najwan Halimi, the state exco for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship, who officiated the carnival.
Past activities, such as the MBPJ Para Carnival in collaboration with the Malaysian Paralympic Council and the Datuk Bandar Cup for Goal Ball, were highlighted at the carnival.
Aznan applauded the partnerships with various organisations, including the Youth and Sports Department of Selangor, the National Sports Council, Selangor Para Swimming Association, Universiti Teknologi Mara, the Department of Social Welfare and the Selangor State Education Department in hosting the carnival.
“These collaborations contributed to the success of the MBPJ-KBS OKU Carnival 2023 at the state level,” he said.
The carnival attracted 600 participants over two days of activities, including exhibitions and competitions.
“This event is also aimed to uncover athletic talents for Selangor’s Sukma 2024 preparations, and I hope that it would heighten awareness about the abilities and sports needs of the OKU community. It will help to foster integration in Petaling Jaya,” he said.
