KUCHING: The Education Ministry has identified 19 problematic school projects in Sarawak which will now be given attention so that they are completed.
According to Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik, to prevent the situation from recurring, the ministry under the Pakatan Harapan will take immediate steps to identify other projects which may be in the same category.
“When I took over the ministry, we found that there were many problematic projects left by the Barisan Nasional government and we found ways to resolve them by quickly identifying projects which could be problematic, and place them under close supervision,” he told reporters here today.
Maszlee was speaking to reporters after visiting the site of the new administrative building and classroom project of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sungai Tapang, here today.
On the project, Maszlee said the project which was being built under the 11th Malaysia Plan at a cost of RM34.8 million, was 97.9% completed.
“This is also part of the government’s commitment to ensure that all such projects are completed and there will be not be problematic projects, it may be a little bit off schedule, but we have the commitment of the Public Works Department and the contractor that it will be completed by November,” he said.
On the 32 dilapidated schools in the state which are being repaired with a budget of RM100 million this year, Maszlee said they are due to be completed by Dec 16.
On the reconstruction of 37 dilapidated schools at a cost of RM350 million, he said the tenders for seven of them have been granted.
“The tenders for the other 30 schools will be given out by December this year, we will be monitoring them closely, I personally will monitor,” he said. — Bernama
