PETALING JAYA: The salaries of ministers and deputy ministers will be deducted for two months and channelled to the Covid-19 relief fund.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) announced this in a statement today, adding that the salary of Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin will also be channeled into the fund.

The statement added that the deduction was decided during a cabinet meeting on March 25.

“This move is to show the government’s support to help those who are affected by the Covid-19 outbreak.

“As of March 25, the amount accumulated in donations and government grants for the fund amounted to RM8,493,103.48,“ the statement read.

In an immediate response, Deputy Minister of Primary Industries and Commodities Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng told theSun that the move was justified.

“This is for the people and I have no problem with it ... In fact, we are also working to increase the amount of the fund,“ he said.

Former Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad lauded the move, saying it is the most responsible thing to do under current circumstances.
