KAJANG: A 41-year-old man was charged with murder at the Kajang magistrate court today over the death of a fellow road user following an argument at the North-South Expressway (NSE) near Bandar Baru Bangi, Selangor on Aug 10.
Yew Wei Liang, 41, was charged under Section Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
He is accused of murdering Syed Muhammad Danial Syed Shakir near Km293.6 of the North South Expressway (NSE) between 1pm and 2pm on Aug 10.
No plea was recorded from Yew as the charges were read before Magistrate Nor Afidah Idris, who presided over the case.
If found guilty, the offense committed under Section 302 carries a possible death penalty.
The case was handled by deputy public prosecutor Siti Noor Hafizan Zakaria, while Yew is represented by counsels S. Selvam and Varghese Onny.
The court fixed Sept 27 for case mention and to hear a complaint by the defence.
Around 1.40pm on Aug 10, Syed Muhammad Danial, 29, was allegedly killed following an altercation over a minor accident with Yew at Km239 of the North-South Expressway’s south-bound lane, near the Bandar Baru Bangi intersection.
Yew and Syed Danial were said to be involved in a car chase and a scuffle ensued between them at the Bandar Baru Bangi interchange. Witnesses at the scene broke up the fight and the two drivers returned to their vehicles.
Syed Danial then allegedly got out of his vehicle, and armed with a baseball bat smashed Yew’s car’s bonnet. Yew was believed to have suddenly lurched his vehicle forward, hitting the victim, who became pinned between the car and the road divider.
He was subsequently rushed to the Nilai Medical Centre but died while receiving treatment.
Subsequently, police detained Yew and his wife to assist in the investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
Both were remanded for seven days until Aug 17, when Yew’s wife was released. Yew’s remand was extended until today.
