KLANG : The arrest of five men in an assault case involving two bodyguards opened a can of worms yesterday when the suspects were found to be involved in loansharking and illegal gambling activities.
Selangor police chief Commissioner Datuk Arjunaidi Mohamad (pix, left) said today that on arresting the suspects who are aged between 35 and 47 on Wednesday, police raided a house in Bandar Bukit Tinggi here where wads of US dollars and 100 kg of gold wafers worth about RM28.45 million were recovered.
He said police also recovered two rattan canes that were used to assault the bodyguards.
Arjunaidi said a pistol and 10 live ammunition belonging to a bodyguard which was snatched from him by a suspect during the assault was also found during the raid.
He said the pistol was licensed and belonged to a security company where the bodyguards were employed.
“The incident led police in uncovering a syndicate that was involved in Ah Long and illegal gambling activities. Investigations into the case are ongoing and we are probing deeper into the syndicate’s activities.” he said at a press conference at the South Klang district police headquarters.
Arjunaidi said the case is being jointly investigated by South Klang and Dang Wangi police as the assault on the guards occurred at two locations on Tuesday night.
He said the five men including the main suspect who is aged 43 are being held under a remand orders of between three and seven days.
Arjunaidi also urged the public to be calm and to not play up the matter as it was a “personal issue” between the victims and their assailants and was not a “racial or religious” matter.
On Tuesday, the main suspect who had hired the bodyguards, one aged 26, had berated the victims on learning they were fasting for the Ramadan month.
The bodyguards were then attacked by the man and several of his other workers with rattan canes.The main suspect also snatched a pistol from one of the bodyguards, pointed it at the victims and made death threats against them.
The victims who suffered bruises and swellings on their back, head and arms lodged police reports before police arrested the suspects on Wednesday.
