Flash floods hit Perak, 69 evacuated to relief centre

Heavy rain triggers flash floods in Perak’s Kampar district, forcing 69 victims from 20 families to evacuate to a temporary relief centre.

IPOH: A temporary relief centre (PPS) has been opened at the Dewan Bandaran Gopeng to accommodate 69 flood victims from 20 families following flooding that struck Kampung Ulu Gerutum in Kampar district today.

The State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat said in a statement that the relief centre was opened at 2 pm and the victims were still being evacuated to the facility.

Meanwhile, Kampar District Civil Defence Force officer, Jasri Mohd Yusof said among the victims evacuated to the PPS were the Orang Asli residents who survived a flash flood incident in Kampung Ulu Geruntum, Kuala Razila, Gopeng yesterday afternoon.

“The incident caused a bridge used by the Orang Asli community to collapse, while the river water level rose to about two metres following heavy rain in the area,” he told Bernama when contacted.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Meteorological Department has also issued a thunderstorm and heavy rain warning for all districts in Perak this afternoon.

In addition, the Department of Irrigation and Drainage reported that Sungai Perak water level at Kampung Terengganu in Hilir Perak district was at an alert level of 3.30 metres, while Sungai Slim in the Muallim district was at a warning level of 24.99 metres.
