China slams ‘irresponsible’ criticism of Taiwan military drills

Beijing rebukes Japan, Australia, and the EU for criticising its military exercises near Taiwan, defending them as necessary actions to protect sovereignty.

BEIJING: China has condemned international criticism of its recent military drills around Taiwan as “irresponsible” and “hypocritical”.

Foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian made the remarks on Wednesday, responding to statements from Japan, Australia, and the European Union.

Japan said the exercises “increase tensions” across the Taiwan Strait, while Australia condemned the “destabilising” military activity.

The European Union stated the drills “endanger international peace and stability”.

Lin accused these countries of “turning a blind eye” to what he called separatist forces in Taiwan.

He said they were making irresponsible criticisms of China’s necessary actions to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The spokesman said Beijing appreciated support from countries including Russia, Pakistan, and Venezuela.

“We want to reiterate China’s unwavering resolve for safeguarding national sovereignty, security and territorial integrity,” Lin added.

He warned that any provocative act on the Taiwan issue would be met with a firm response.

China launched missiles and deployed fighter jets and navy ships around Taiwan on Monday and Tuesday.
