South Korean e-commerce leader Coupang’s CEO steps down, taking responsibility for a data breach impacting 33.7 million customers.
SEOUL: The chief executive of South Korean e-commerce giant Coupang has resigned following a major data leak.
CEO Park Dae-jun announced his departure on Wednesday, taking full responsibility for the incident and its handling.
“I am deeply sorry for having disappointed the public over the recent personal data incident,” Park said in a statement.
He confirmed he would step down from all his positions at the company.
The data breach is believed to have affected 33.7 million customers, nearly two-thirds of South Korea’s population.
Seoul police raided the firm’s headquarters on Tuesday as part of their investigation.
Authorities stated the leak occurred through Coupang’s overseas servers between June 24 and November 8.
The company reportedly only became aware of the breach last month.
Coupang has filed a complaint against a former employee, a Chinese national, alleged to be responsible.
The suspect remains at large and has not been apprehended.
The e-commerce firm now faces a class action lawsuit in the United States, where its global headquarters is located.
