President Prabowo warns officials against exploiting Sumatra disaster

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto calls for stronger measures to prevent corruption in disaster relief, ensuring resources support affected communities in Sumatra

JAKARTA: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has instructed ministers and governors to step up efforts to curb corruption across state institutions, especially to prevent anyone from exploiting the Sumatra disaster for personal gain, reported ANTARA news agency.

In a meeting at Sultan Iskandar Muda Air Force Base in Aceh Besar on Sunday, Prabowo said the disaster underscored the need for efficient resource management.

“This shows that we must manage all our resources optimally. I remind you that there must be no misuse or corruption in any government entity,” he said. “It proved we need every ounce of our resources to overcome the people’s difficulties.”

Prabowo stressed that the government must mobilise all available resources and funding to support affected communities.

He instructed ministers and Governors to review their staff and the projects under their authority. “I do not want anyone exploiting this disaster for personal enrichment. I will take firm action, so no one profits from the people’s suffering,” he said.

Prabowo urged the National Police and regional administrations to monitor potential misuse and impose strict sanctions.

“All parties must check and note any misconduct, including unjustified price increases,” he said. After inspecting several disaster-hit areas in Aceh, Prabowo chaired a meeting on disaster management efforts in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.

He highlighted severe conditions in several areas, including damaged rice fields that could disrupt local food production and disruptions at dams that have affected irrigation systems.

Prabowo acknowledged ongoing challenges, particularly those linked to natural conditions that demand continued vigilance.

He said the government would ensure that response and recovery measures proceed in a gradual, measured, and sustainable manner to accelerate the restoration of community livelihoods. – Bernama-ANTARA
