Gig Workers Act 2025 enforcement to start by March

The Gig Workers Act 2025 will be enforced by March, offering social protection and training for over 1.2 million gig workers

PETALING JAYA: The Gig Workers Act 2025 (Act 872) will be enforced by the end of March.

This follows the finalisation of all implementation mechanisms, including the consultative council, tribunal, and related offices.

Minister of Human Resources Datuk Seri R Ramanan said the structure of the gig workers consultative council membership will be announced later.

Priority will be given to large-scale platforms like Grab, which involve a large percentage of the country’s gig workforce.

“We will announce the membership structure soon… we do need to give priority to several parties, especially those involved on a large scale,” he told reporters after officiating the Grab Partner Campus here.

The Gig Workers Act, gazetted on 31 December, aims to champion social protection, welfare rights, and the dignity of gig workers.

It provides protection equivalent to formal workers for over 1.2 million national gig workers.

Ramanan said Grab has stated its commitment to expand Social Security Organisation (PERKESO) contributions to 15% of all its registered gig workers, up from 10% previously.

Grab will also provide training and skills upgrading programmes for 5,000 workers this year.

This is supported by government funding through the Skills Development Fund Corporation (PTPK) in an effort to support gig worker welfare.

Regarding the regulation of gig worker income, Ramanan said the national minimum wage rate of RM1,700 remains the basic policy.

The handling of delivery personnel wages is subject to their respective platforms.

He also rejected the suggestion to set a uniform floor price rate for all platforms.

He said this would pressure e-hailing platforms still struggling to make a profit, and there is a need to maintain a balance between worker welfare and business sustainability.

“Many argue that if we take good care of workers, everything will be okay. Winning is what is usually done, but as I informed all senior ministry officials, we need to have a balance,” he said.
