Malaysia’s agri-food trade value increased to RM148.11 billion in 2024, an 18.4% rise, though the trade deficit also widened.

GOPENG: Malaysia’s agri-food trade value has shown impressive growth, increasing to RM148.11 billion in 2024 from RM125.07 billion in 2023.

This marks a significant 18.4% rise in the nation’s agri-food trade performance.
Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security secretary-general Datuk Seri Isham Ishak said the increase reflects positive development for the sector.

He stated this encouraging performance demonstrates Malaysia’s capability to reinforce its position in the regional and international agri-food value chain.

Isham attributed this growth to the government’s implementation of various strategic initiatives.

These initiatives aim to enhance high-value agricultural production and improve national food supply chain management efficiency.

He delivered these remarks at the launch of the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority’s 60th anniversary celebration.

The event was held at the Rural Transformation Centre in Gopeng.

However, Isham noted that Malaysia recorded an agri-food trade deficit of RM39.34 billion in 2024.

This represents an increase from the RM32.32 billion trade deficit recorded in 2023. He said this demonstrates the country’s continued high dependence on imports.

Isham emphasised that efforts to reduce the deficit must be intensified to curb the outflow of national funds.

He described this situation as a challenge requiring comprehensive strategies.

These strategies should focus on boosting exports of agricultural and agri-food products, especially high-value ones.

Isham also highlighted FAMA’s ongoing role in strengthening the agri-food marketing ecosystem.

He said FAMA would remain proactive in expanding its entrepreneur network and optimising digital technology use.

He expressed hope that the 60th anniversary celebration would spark new energy for building a more prosperous agri-food future.

This future should be inclusive and sustainable, elevating the sector as a strategic industry for national food sovereignty. – Bernama
