Malaysian Islamic youth movement ABIM demands UN intervention in Sudan, calls for sanctions against RSF supporters over Darfur genocide
KUALA LUMPUR: Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (ABIM) has expressed grave concern over the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, particularly in Al-Fashir, the capital of North Darfur, where a massacre by the Rapid Support Forces was reportedly committed.
ABIM president Ahmad Fahmi Mohd Samsudin cited a United Nations Human Rights Office and Human Rights Watch report indicating more than 15,000 civilians have been killed in Darfur since the conflict reignited in 2023.
He noted that over 10 million Sudanese people have fled the country due to the ongoing violence.
Ahmad Fahmi stated that the atrocities in Darfur clearly meet the definition of genocide under the 1948 Genocide Convention, specifically targeting the Masalit and other Darfur African groups based on their ethnic identities.
ABIM demands immediate intervention from the UN, the African Union, and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation to halt RSF operations and protect civilians throughout Darfur.
The organisation also calls for comprehensive sanctions against any country, entity, or individual providing funds, weapons, or military support to the RSF.
ABIM insists that humanitarian agencies must be granted unfettered access to famine-affected areas in Sudan.
The group further pressed for an independent international investigation under the International Criminal Court to prosecute all perpetrators of war crimes and genocide.
Ahmad Fahmi emphasised that Malaysia, through Wisma Putra, should play an active role in supporting emergency UN resolutions and bringing the issue to ASEAN and the Islamic world.
He stressed that the Sudanese government has a legal duty to stop attacks against its own people.
Ethnic killings must not be allowed to continue or become normalised in international relations, according to Ahmad Fahmi.
ABIM, through its humanitarian agency Global Peace Mission Malaysia, has launched an aid campaign for Sudan on pedulisudan.com.
This campaign aims to support the rescue, treatment, and rehabilitation of victims affected by the conflict. – Bernama
