Anwar Ibrahim says probes into MACC chief Azam Baki are ongoing, stressing transparency and that his stance “then and now” remains consistent.
PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has defended the government’s handling of allegations against Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, stressing that investigations are ongoing and that his position “then and now” remains consistent.
Speaking during Prime Minister’s Question Time, Anwar was responding to a supplementary question from Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal on perceived differences between his past stance and his current approach, amid allegations involving share ownership and a corporate mafia network.
Previously, Anwar had urged Azam Baki to go on leave in 2022 to facilitate investigations into share ownership.
“Let us not be suspicious. Let investigations proceed and establish the facts. Whether Anwar (referring to himself) previously made such a call, it is still subject to the same process.
“I have asked that there must be a transparent investigation process, including the share ownership issue and the allegations of a corporate mafia.
“Both of these matters are not closed — that is the difference,” Anwar said.
Anwar stressed that the investigative process is transparent, led by the Attorney General, and follows established legal procedures.
“Let us first review the report, which includes issues that require careful examination.
“This covers the share ownership matter as well as allegations raised by Bloomberg, which the Machang MP referred to as an authentic document, but with which I do not agree.
“Nevertheless, since there are allegations, we should examine and investigate them.”
He also clarified that investigations can be extended if initial inquiries are found to be insufficient.
“Under Cabinet terms, the investigation can be extended if it does not fully cover the scope of the objections raised,” he said.
