A 22-year-old student denies driving under the influence after crashing at Istana Negara, facing a potential RM10,000 fine and jail time.
KUALA LUMPUR: A private university student has claimed trial to a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol after an incident at Istana Negara.
M. Kajen, 22, pleaded not guilty at the Magistrate’s Court here to the charge read before Magistrate Khairunnisak Hassni.
He was allegedly driving a Toyota Vios with a blood alcohol level of 166 milligrammes per 100 millilitres, exceeding the legal limit.
The incident occurred at about 3.50 am at Gate 2 of Istana Negara on Jalan Changkat Semantan.

The charge is framed under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Upon conviction, it provides for a fine of up to RM10,000, imprisonment of up to five years, and disqualification from holding a driving licence.
Deputy public prosecutor Inspector Shazwan Hasifi Shahrun proposed bail be set at RM10,000.
The accused requested a lower amount, citing he is still a student and comes from a low-income family.
The court granted him bail of RM4,000 with one surety.
