A former NGO chairman faces charges for allegedly misappropriating RM207,000 in humanitarian aid donations meant for Myanmar, Yemen, Syria and Palestine
KUALA LUMPUR: A former NGO chairman pleaded not guilty to misappropriating RM207,000 in humanitarian aid donations.
Mohd Hakim Mohd Nor, 39, was charged in his capacity as the former chairman of Pertubuhan Kebajikan Serantau Muslim.
The funds were allegedly misappropriated from donations collected for aid missions in Myanmar, Yemen, Syria and Palestine.
He is accused of committing the offence at a bank in Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin on 27 December 2019.
The charge under Section 403 of the Penal Code carries a potential jail term of six months to five years, with whipping or a fine.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Asmaa’ Zamri applied for bail of RM50,000 with several additional conditions.
These included monthly reporting to the MACC, surrendering his passport, and not interfering with witnesses.
Defence lawyer Azzizul Shariman Mat Yusoff requested a lower bail of RM10,000, citing his client’s family responsibilities.
He stated Mohd Hakim supports three school-going children, his ailing parents, and a wife with a modest income.
“The accused has given full cooperation throughout the investigation since 2025,” said the lawyer.
He also noted his client faces further charges in Melaka and Ipoh courts in the coming days.
Judge Azrul Darus allowed bail at RM10,000 with one surety and imposed the prosecution’s additional conditions.
The court ordered the accused to report to the MACC and surrender his travel document.
The case has been set for mention on 11 March for the submission of documents.
In June last year, MACC identified an NGO chairman in Melaka as a main suspect in a separate RM26 million donation embezzlement case.
