Former army pathologist’s final bid to challenge conviction and death sentence for killing DPP Kevin Morais gets July date at Federal Court.
PUTRAJAYA: The Federal Court has fixed July 31 to hear former army pathologist Colonel R Kunaseegaran’s application for a review of his murder conviction and death sentence.
Kunaseegaran was convicted for the 2015 murder of deputy public prosecutor Datuk Kevin Morais.
His counsel, Jasmine Cheong, confirmed the date was set during a case management before a deputy registrar.
On July 1 last year, the Federal Court upheld Kunaseegaran’s conviction and death sentence for Morais’ murder.
The apex court also affirmed the convictions of two other accused but commuted their death sentences to life imprisonment.
Unemployed S Nimalan, 33, was sentenced to 35 years and 12 strokes of the cane.
Moneylender S Ravi Chandran, 55, received 40 years’ imprisonment and was spared caning due to his age.
The previous Federal Court bench noted Kunaseegaran had withdrawn his appeal against the conviction.
The same bench discharged and acquitted three other individuals who had been charged with the murder.
Morais, 55, was reported missing on Sept 4, 2015.
His body was discovered on Sept 16 that year, encased in a cement-filled oil drum in Subang Jaya.
The High Court convicted all six men and sentenced them to death on July 10, 2020.
The Court of Appeal dismissed their appeals on March 14, 2024.
Kunaseegaran filed his application for leave to review on Nov 14 last year.
In his motion, the 63-year-old seeks a rehearing of his appeal before the Federal Court.
He claims to have suffered a grave miscarriage of justice and asserts his right to a proper and fair trial.
