Two men, including a Rohingya, charged in court for smuggling a Myanmar national along the East Coast Expressway.
CHUKAI: Two men, including a Rohingya, were charged in the Kemaman Sessions Court here today with smuggling a Myanmar migrant.
Mohamad Ismail Mohamad Siddik, 32, and local man Noor Effendy Yusoh @ Zakaria, 41, indicated they understood the charge when it was read out to them before Judge Wan Suhaila Mohd.
No plea was recorded as the offence falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
The duo are accused of smuggling a Myanmar national, a man in his 20s, at the roadside near Kilometre 255.3 of the East Coast Expressway 2 (LPT2), Perasing, heading towards Kuala Lumpur, at 11.30 am on April 24.
They were charged under Section 26A of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years’ imprisonment and a fine, or both, upon conviction.
The court denied bail and fixed Aug 18 for further mention of the case.
Deputy public prosecutors Ahmad Hafizudin Manjur Ahmad and Noradila Abdul Latif appeared for the prosecution, while both accused were unrepresented.
