Police detain 33 motorcyclists, including one foreigner, for dangerous riding during traffic operation on Second Penang Bridge
BATU KAWAN: Police arrested 33 individuals, including a foreign national, for dangerous riding during an operation on the Second Penang Bridge.
The arrests occurred at KM3.8 of the bridge heading towards Batu Kawan during Ops Motosikal early yesterday morning.
Seberang Perai Selatan district police chief Supt Jay January Siowou confirmed all detainees aged 16 to 27 were apprehended by traffic enforcement teams.
“When ordered to stop, the motorcyclists made a U-turn and rode against the traffic flow towards Batu Maung,” he said in a statement.
He described this as an extremely dangerous action that endangered both the riders and other road users.
Police managed to arrest all 33 individuals despite their attempt to evade capture.
During the operation, authorities impounded 51 motorcycles under Section 64(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
All suspects were taken to the Seberang Perai Selatan district police headquarters for further action.
Police inspected 110 motorcycles during the operation and issued 74 summonses for various traffic offences.
The operation targeted reckless riding behavior that has become a concern on the bridge connecting Penang island to the mainland. – Bernama
