Businessman loses RM62,000 in fake tender cable scam

A businessman was cheated of RM62,000 after a scammer posing as an ILP employee offered a fake tender for electrical cable supply.

KUALA TERENGGANU: A businessman lost RM62,000 after being deceived by a non-existent tender for electrical cable supply.

Kuala Terengganu police chief ACP Azli Mohd Noor said the victim received an SMS on Jan 11 from a man posing as a Marang Industrial Training Institute (ILP) employee.

The suspect offered a project to supply electrical cables worth over RM60,000 within three days.

“The suspect also gave the victim the phone number of his friend, said to be a cable supplier, to facilitate the purchase of the goods,” Azli said in a statement.

The victim contacted the supplier and made two payments totalling RM62,000 on Jan 25 and 26.

He became suspicious after being asked for an additional RM40,000 payment for customs clearance.

The victim then contacted Marang ILP, which denied the tender’s existence.

A police report was lodged yesterday afternoon, and the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
