JPJ Kuala Lumpur seizes 65 vehicles, including an RM18,000 modified Yamaha, in overnight operations against dangerous riding and illegal modifications
KUALA LUMPUR: A Yamaha Y15 motorcycle modified at an extreme cost of up to RM18,000 was among 65 vehicles seized in three separate operations by the Kuala Lumpur Road Transport Department last night.
Senior JPJ Enforcement Director Datuk Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said the operations focused on motorcyclists riding dangerously and making modifications not in line with set technical specifications.
The operations, conducted at Jalan Genting Sempah, the Gombak Toll Plaza, and Jalan Ampang near the KLCC Twin Towers, concluded at 5am.
A total of 3,244 vehicles were inspected, resulting in 811 summons notices and the seizure of 65 motorcycles.
Those detained were teenagers and young adults aged between 14 and 25, including some foreigners.
Key offences detected included dangerous riding stunts such as the “Superman”, “willy”, and “zigzag”, alongside illegal racing activities.
Muhammad Kifli stated the enforcement action, which began simultaneously at 10pm, was launched following public complaints regarding noise and road disturbances caused by the motorcyclists.
To date this year, 1,002 motorcycles have been seized for various offences, particularly involving extreme modifications and dangerous riding activities.
JPJ is also taking stricter action against the use of “fancy”, extreme, and misleading registration numbers.
Offenders face a minimum fine of RM5,000 and a maximum of RM10,000 under Section 108 of the Road Transport Act 1987.
“We have brought these cases to court, and fines from RM5,000 to RM10,000 have been imposed for that offence,” said Muhammad Kifli.
He added that JPJ has observed many motorcycles and cars recently using “fancy” and extreme numbers that confuse other enforcement agencies.
Regarding operations on luxury vehicles, he said ‘Op Luxury’, launched on 1 July, targets owners of luxury cars who fail to renew their Motor Vehicle Licences.
So far, 915 luxury vehicles have been seized, and their owners are on JPJ’s radar.
They have been reminded to renew their road tax immediately to avoid legal action.
In a separate development, Muhammad Kifli said the 50% discount under the JPJ MADANI summons discount programme is still effective until 30 December.
To date, 702,606 summons notices have been settled, involving collections worth RM93.51 million.
However, 4.76 million outstanding summonses with a value exceeding RM1 billion remain unsettled.
The public is urged to take the opportunity to settle their summonses before the discount period ends.
