Twenty Malaysians rescued from online scam syndicates in Myanmar have been safely repatriated with assistance from the Foreign Ministry.
KUALA LUMPUR: The Foreign Ministry has successfully facilitated the return of 20 Malaysians rescued from online job scam syndicates in Myanmar.
The group arrived safely at the Bukit Kayu Hitam ICQS Complex in Kedah at 7.20 pm on Tuesday.
They were subsequently handed over to the Malaysian police to assist in further investigations.
The ministry said the Malaysians were among several foreign nationals rescued by Myanmar authorities in recent operations against online scam syndicates in the Myawaddy area.
Officials from the Malaysian embassy in Bangkok travelled to Myawaddy via the Mae Sot–Myawaddy Second Friendship Bridge to verify their identities and receive them.
This was made possible through coordination between the authorities in Myanmar, Thailand and Malaysia.
The embassy provided comprehensive consular assistance throughout the 26-hour journey from Mae Sot to Bukit Kayu Hitam.
This included notifying family members, issuing temporary travel documents, and arranging transportation and essential supplies.
The ministry said the success of the operation was due to strong cooperation between the Home Ministry, police, Immigration Department, and Malaysian diplomatic missions in Bangkok, Yangon and Songkhla.
It also expressed sincere appreciation to the Thai government and Myanmar authorities for their cooperation in facilitating the repatriation.
The latest effort follows earlier operations to facilitate the return of Malaysians trapped in job scam syndicates abroad.
