Motorcycle wheelie stunts on SPE highway lead to arrests

Two men detained after performing dangerous wheelie stunts on the SPE highway as police act on viral social media footage.

KUALA LUMPUR: Two men paid the price for pulling off dangerous ‘wheelie’ stunts while riding high-powered motorcycles on the Setiawangsa-Pantai Expressway (SPE) after they were detained by police early this morning following the circulation of a video of the act on social media.

Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief ACP Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the two men, aged 31 and 36, were detained at 6 am to assist in investigations, while a motorcycle was also seized for further investigation.

He said police checks had found that the incident occurred at about 11 am on May 9 on the SPE Highway from the city centre heading towards Putrajaya.

“The dangerous stunt is believed to have been carried out by the two riders on Ducati motorcycles, namely a red Ducati Hypermotard 950 and a black Ducati Panigale, while travelling in a moving motorcycle convoy,” he said in a statement today.

According to him, the two men were remanded for one day to assist in investigations, and police had also taken several other actions, including applying for closed-circuit camera recordings and documenting the motorcycles involved.

The case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous riding that endangered other road users.
