Education ministry strengthens school safety, takes firm stance on bullying

The Education Ministry will not compromise on bullying, deploying new teachers, CCTV in hostels, and safety audits to ensure a secure school environment.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Education (MOE) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening school safety and will not tolerate any form of bullying.

Deputy Minister Wong Kah Woh stated that combating bullying requires cooperation from all parties and full compliance with existing professional circular letters (SPI).

“MOE will not compromise on any form of bullying in educational institutions,” he said during a Dewan Negara session.

He was responding to a question from Senator Datuk Salehuddin Saidin regarding measures to enhance safety and prevent bullying.

Wong listed several key SPI guidelines covering bullying management, student safety, disciplinary reporting, and the Safe School Programme.

The safe school concept emphasises a stable physical, social, and emotional environment for all.

This aligns with the MOE’s immediate action plan, which includes safety surveys conducted by a special reform committee.

Nationwide safety audits have been conducted, alongside the installation of CCTV cameras and strengthened mental health support programmes.

To boost school capacity, 10,096 new teachers were deployed last November, including over 500 guidance and counselling teachers.

The ministry allocated RM3 million for CCTV installation in 200 school hostels, completed by November 19.

Installation will expand to another 333 schools with an additional RM5 million allocation.

From 2026, the MOE will appoint 600 hostel assistant wardens from MySTEP personnel to strengthen night-time surveillance.

Wong stressed that reforms to the school security system will continue for more effective bullying prevention. – Bernama
