Erosion and clogged drainage caused Taman United landslide

A landslide at Taman United occurred due to water erosion weakening a retaining wall and tree roots clogging drainage, forcing resident evacuations.

KUALA LUMPUR: A landslide at Taman United is believed to have been caused by a retaining wall weakened by water erosion and unable to withstand additional load.

Seputeh MP Teresa Kok stated the non-reinforced retaining wall had long lost strength due to erosion.

She noted large trees growing on the wall added extra weight while their roots clogged the drainage system.

Kok received this assessment from officers of the Selangor and Kuala Lumpur Department of Minerals and Geoscience during a site inspection.

She advised Block C apartment residents to comply with evacuation orders and relocate to Sri Petaling Community Hall for safety.

“The Social Welfare Department and my office will be at the hall to assess the needs of the affected residents,” she said.

Selangor and Kuala Lumpur Department of Minerals and Geoscience director Rusli Mohamad also attended the inspection.

The Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department received the landslide report at 11.02 am yesterday along Jalan Sepadu 6.

More than 100 residents from a low-cost apartment were ordered to evacuate following continuous morning rain.

No casualties were reported from the incident.

MSC delivers strong Q3 with higher revenue as tin prices, mining output rise

Malaysia Smelting Corporation Bhd (MSC) posted a stronger third quarter with revenue rising 12.7% year-on-year to RM529.5 million, supported by higher sales of refined tin, tin-bearing intermediates, and firmer tin prices. Net profit climbed 42.7% to RM20.4 million as improved mining output and better margins from intermediates helped offset smelting losses linked to trading and forex impacts. With tin demand underpinned by technology-driven sectors and supply remaining structurally tight, MSC said it is strengthening operations and advancing its transition to the more efficient Pulau Indah plant to support long-term competitiveness.
