Penang aims to install 5,000 CCTVs, including 1,000 in Seberang Perai, by October to boost public safety and smart city management.

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Penang aims to install 5,000 CCTVs throughout the state by October for enhanced security.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the initiative aligns with the use of smart technology like IoT, big data, and AI to create a safer urban environment.

“In line with the approach, the setting up of Seberang Perai ASPIRE Centre (SPACE) as an Seberang Perai City Council integrated operations centre will improve smart city management,” he said.

Chow stated this during the officiation of SPACE by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Seberang Perai mayor Datuk Baderul Amin Abdul Hamid said SPACE will function as the main platform to coordinate city operations systematically.

“Through SPACE, city data management can be conducted in an integrated manner in one control centre,” he said.

He added that the centre will support monitoring of parking violations, illegal waste dumping, and heavy vehicle movement.

Baderul Amin said SPACE would also provide information support to security agencies to boost crime enforcement and prevention.

The centre uses fibre optic networks as its system backbone and is equipped with Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology.

So far, 11 hotspots have been identified and are monitored under the city council’s control system.

Efforts for the integrated operations centre began in 2014 with the establishment of a CCTV control room. – Bernama
