Extended coverage scheme welcomed

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s workers have welcomed the government’s proposed Lindung 24/7 scheme, saying around-the-clock Social Security Organisation (Socso) protection could be a game-changer for employee welfare, particularly for those in shift, remote and gig-based roles who face risks beyond regular working hours.

Currently, Socso coverage is limited to accidents occurring during working hours or while commuting.

The proposed scheme seeks to extend protection to cases outside official hours, offering employees additional financial security against unexpected risks.

Transport manager Tina Abdullah, 55, said the initiative could ease the financial burden of many workers.

“The cost of treatment is often high and not all workers can afford private insurance. This proposal is beneficial as it could lighten the financial load of many.”

She suggested a small monthly contribution from employees, recommending RM50.

“Employees would feel more confident and valued, knowing their welfare is a priority for their employers.”

Account executive Nurul Aida Natasya Abdul Razak, 27, said the coverage is especially relevant for those working overtime or travelling to clients in remote areas.

“Although I have never experienced an accident outside working hours, I believe this protection is necessary.

“A modest increase of about 3% from existing contributions could make a big difference.”

She added that around-the-clock protection would motivate employees and enhance their perception of employer responsibility in ensuring worker welfare.

Shift workers, who face higher risks, were among the most enthusiastic supporters.

A site engineer who asked to be known only as Tinaesh and often working on late-night shifts, highlighted the hazards of his field.

“We travel at odd hours and sometimes work long shifts, so the risk of accidents is higher.

“Having 24-hour protection would give us peace of mind,” he said, citing a colleague involved in a motorcycle accident after a night shift that was not covered by Socso, forcing him to bear the costs personally.

He said he would be willing to contribute a small monthly fee, suggesting between RM10 and RM20, provided the benefits are clear and the claims process straightforward.

“This could benefit people in engineering and other shift-based jobs. But the details matter.

“How will Socso define ‘after hours’ coverage, and how will claims be handled?”

Employees agreed that clear guidelines and efficient implementation are essential.

“If done right, the Lindung 24/7 proposal could set a new benchmark for social security in Malaysia, offering workers greater protection and peace of mind.”
