Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil pays tribute to the late Joseph Bingkasan, a veteran journalist who significantly shaped media in Sabah and Sarawak.
KUALA LUMPUR: Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has expressed his condolences to the family of veteran journalist Joseph Bingkasan, who passed away early today.
Fahmi described him as a media practitioner who made significant contributions to the country’s journalism industry. He particularly highlighted Bingkasan’s role in strengthening the editorial landscape in Sabah and Sarawak.
“My condolences to the entire family,” Fahmi said in a Facebook post. He added that he was deeply saddened by the passing and wished the family strength and resilience.
The minister also noted that Bingkasan was among the recipients of the Tabung Kasih@HAWANA aid in 2023.
Joseph Bingkasan died at 3.56 am at Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Kota Kinabalu. He was 71 years old and is believed to have passed away due to cancer.
His journalism career began as a sub-editor with the Kinabalu Sabah Times in 1977. He later joined New Straits Times Press (NSTP) as a correspondent in Sabah.
Bingkasan also served at Times of Malaysia London Ltd, the NST office in London. He was eventually appointed editorial head of NST for Sabah and Sarawak, based in Kuching.
He had also previously worked with Sabah’s local newspaper, the Daily Express.
