Fahmi seeks deeper Google ties for online safety

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil calls for stronger collaboration with Google to boost online safety, digital literacy, and AI-driven protection in Malaysia.

KUALA LUMPUR: Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has called for deeper engagement and more constructive collaboration with tech giant Google to bolster online safety measures in Malaysia.

He specifically highlighted the need for joint initiatives focused on enhancing digital literacy, increasing awareness regarding the pervasive threat of scams, and leveraging artificial intelligence (AI).

“What I’d like to do is actually team up with Google, alongside the ASEAN Foundation, to deploy initiatives that keep ourselves not only better informed but also better protected through the better use of AI,” he said in his opening remarks when officiating the Asia Pacific Online Safety Dialogue 2026 here today.

He commended Google’s proactive approach in ensuring user safety, noting that the company has been more forward-leaning compared to other industry players in creating a secure online environment.

Fahmi also suggested utilising the ministry’s extensive network of nearly 1,100 National Information Dissemination Centres (NADI) as hubs for any safety programmes.

“Think of them (NADI) as Google Cyber Academies, that is what they used to be. This is one thing which I believe we have room to work together, and I hope we can have some constructive and immediate discussions,” he said.

Furthermore, he expressed his commitment to strengthening strategic cooperation between the National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA) and Google to assess and address cybersecurity risks, including through the deployment of Google’s specialised tools.
