Johor DAP vice chairman Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali apologises for riding a motorcycle without a helmet during the Johor election campaign.
JOHOR BAHRU: Johor DAP vice chairman Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali today apologised for not wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle during the recent 16th Johor state election campaign, which went viral on social media recently.
Sheikh Umar, who is also a Senator and former chairman of the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM), admitted that he was the individual who went viral in the video.
“I apologise for riding a motorcycle without a helmet on the morning of nomination in Paloh town. I will pay the summons,” he said in a statement on his Facebook page.
Earlier, the Ministry of Transport (MOT) instructed the Road Transport Department (RTD) to issue summonses against individuals who were spotted riding motorcycles without wearing helmets based on evidence from the viral video.
Its Minister Anthony Loke said MOT was taking seriously the viral issue regarding a group of PH campaign workers, including from DAP, who rode motorcycles without helmets during the Johor polls campaign.
Polling day for the 16th Johor state election is set for tomorrow, July 11.
