PETALING JAYA: The Ministry of Higher Education aims to expand the digital transformation model developed by the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre to all teaching hospitals nationwide.

Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said this initiative would enable faster and more secure sharing of data and patient records between teaching hospitals.

He added that the expansion supports the Public Sector Digitalisation Strategic Plan 2021–2025 and the national higher education digitalisation agenda.

Zambry spoke after witnessing the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Medical Record Exchange between PPUM and Sultan Ahmad Shah Medical Centre.

PPUM has developed a data integration system known as the Total Hospital Information System involving electronic applications including smartphones to monitor patient conditions.

The minister described this as an interesting development because the integrated system enables data sharing between universities.

He expressed hope that the system could be widely used and improved according to each institution’s specific needs.

PPUM introduced two major innovations through its data integration system: the Patient Journey mobile application and Virtual Ward.

These innovations allow patients to manage their treatment journey and receive healthcare from home.

The MoU signing between PPUM and SASMEC marks a significant step toward developing a secure electronic medical record exchange system.

This collaboration will enhance continuity of care between university teaching hospitals under the ministry.

Zambry noted that PPUM’s system strengthens the health data sharing network between universities.

He stated that this system can serve as a model for developing the country’s smart hospitals.

The digitalisation of the health sector improves both patient efficiency and safety according to the minister.

It also forms the basis for a sustainable data-based research and learning culture.

There are currently 11 university teaching hospitals nationwide under the ministry’s purview.

The ministry will encourage all relevant institutions to work together in expanding the system’s use. – Bernama
