Kuantan council engineer fined RM16,000 for accepting RM2,000 in bribes

An MBK assistant engineer was fined RM16,000 for two counts of bribery totalling RM2,000, with a jail term if the fine is not paid.

KUANTAN: An assistant engineer with the Kuantan City Council (MBK) was fined RM16,000 by the Sessions Court here after being convicted on two counts of accepting bribes.

Judge Sazlina Safie also ordered the accused, 43-year-old Mohd Yusrizal Md Ledza, to serve six months in jail if he fails to pay the fine.

He was found guilty of receiving two bribes of RM1,000 each from a female contractor in relation to his official duties.

The bribes were deposited into his bank account via online transactions.

The offences were committed at a bank in Temerloh on March 7 and March 23, 2022.

He was charged under Section 165 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum sentence of two years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Asraf Mohamed Tahir sought a proportionate sentence in the public interest.

He emphasised the court’s role in sending a deterrent message to prevent such offences.

Defence lawyer Datuk Zaharman Zainal Abidin appealed for leniency, citing his client’s monthly salary of about RM4,200.

He noted the accused supports a wife and three children aged between three and 12 years old.

The lawyer also highlighted that his client has no prior criminal record.

He stated the accused cooperated fully with the MACC and the court throughout the proceedings.

Mohd Yusrizal has expressed remorse and promised not to repeat his actions.
